Well it was a nippy start to the day with temps at 52 with a strong gusty wind at times which made it feel even colder. The skies were a deep blue and just magnificent when outlined by the green tree tops. After a bowl of peaches, blueberries and banana and my quiet time I headed out with long pants on and a flannel shirt over a t-shirt; it was that nippy. I did some weed whacking and ran up on a large hole in the ground with hundreds of angry yellow jacket bees swarming, luckily I managed to get away before we became personally acquainted which translates to I never got stung. There was a young fellow last week who was mowing up on top not to far from where I was picking blueberries who got into a nest of them in the ground and he became real acquainted several times before he managed to run from the area. Needless to say that area still has high grass although I did see an empty plastic bottle in the area. Well back to my nest of bees I took a plastic pop bottle and stuffed some old rag inside to act as a wick then poured some gasoline in the bottle and turned it upside down in the hole when the bees had settled down. After our guests left for the evening I poured more gas in the hole to get those bees I had missed during the day.
After playing with the bees and edging I headed to the area of my garden where I had been growing about 30 hills of Kennebec spuds. I had dug a few hills last weeks and was surprised at how few I found and it was the same today. I may have dug a total of 1/2 bushel all together but they sure have a wonderful flavor. After diggings spuds and tearing down some old tomato plants and stakes Nancy fixed us a couple 'mater sandwiches for lunch, Yumm, Yumm!!!
She was ready to go off on her hike and I was ready to rest a minute or two(didn't want to overdo it) so she headed out by herself to the top. She was gone about an hour an half with the camera and ran into lots of mountain top neighbors and friends. I just chilled watching a little NCAA football and tennis. We took off on the golf cart when she got back to check on the mail and I received another get well card today, wow thanks to all who sent me cards and well wishes on Facebook.
Well about 4 PM I put on the chicken for tonight's feed and slow grilled it with a couple pieces of Hickory wood on the grates. Wow did that ever make some great tasty meat. There was all kinds of tasty food food brought by all with scalloped tomato's, deviled eggs, 'tater salad and green beans, Nancy made her famous squash casserole and there was pound cake with strawberry's. What a feast.
After eating we cleared the table, washed the dishes and put the gloves on for a knock down game of Sequence; once again the gals finagled their way to a win with some "less than scrupulous play." But a win is a win and I'm not one to whine about so at least I was sleeping with a winner. Saturday nights have not been the same since Sequence!!!
Well its off to worship in the AM at Cornerstone and Nancy and I just love these folks. Sure do miss our grand babies though; Ava, Annsley and Samuel who is 6 months old, yesterday. LATER

Friday
Well the morning stated out with our quiet times and a lite breakfast before getting ready to head to the doctor's office in Sparta. My blood viscosity is almost where the doctor wanted but still was good enough to stay off the heparin shots, he did increase my daily cumadin. I was allowed to resume normal physical activity, yeah!!!
After leaving the doctors office we headed over to Galax, Va to pick up a new trailer for our mountain mom, Helen at Tractors Supply, I just love that store. Meanwhile we decided to go and have lunch at Applebee's while we were in Galax and had a rather tasty lunch of chipolte chicken wrap and fries. It was very good and would have that again. We unloaded her trailer and got it ready for her to go to work on Saturday morning, brother Joe headed to town to get her diesel fuel for her tractor as well.
Well after getting back from Helen's I just relaxed as nurse Nancy made me not overdo it the first day back so I watched some really good tennis until it was time to help with supper. We made a huge fresh salad and wow was that ever tasty as well. While she cleaned up I gassed up the riding mower and mowed until it was time to take our first together hike in almost 10 days. I could feel the muscles as we started and stopped several times going up the back trail but it felt so good to be able to exercise. We got back and noticed neighbor Gerald's 4 wheeler in the driveway seeking us out to play cards. We changed clothes and headed down on the golf cart.
Well the guys put it on the gals in the first game of Spades and nearly won the second as well. We had some tense moments as I will nil twice and nearly pulled off a back to back nil bid. We got home just before 11PM and headed for the showers. It was sure breezy and there was a feeling of Fall in the air. Well we are having the old gang over for supper and Sequence this evening; should be a raucous evening with lots of banter, laughs and way too much food. The Ray's beat the Orioles last night to stay in the run with the Yanks for first place. LATER

Thursday
Once again it was another beautiful morning with low 60's in the early morning and 80's by late afternoon. It was still a dry day so you didn't mind the bright sunshine; however we could use of little of hurricane Earl to send a few rain showers this way as I'm hand watering whats left of my garden. After our quiet times and a lite breakfast and what hopefully will be my last belly shot of heparin, I headed down to the garden to gather a few cukes and then eventually dig a few hills of potato's. Nancy wouldn't let me dig more than a few so I headed on up to sit on the couch and tune in to the US Open.
Nancy headed out on her morning hike, yikes do I ever miss that and so do my muscles and when she returned we had a leftover brat for lunch. I spent the biggest part of the afternoon with my leg elevated watching several tennis matches. I had picked the last of the 1/2 runner green beans and along with freshly dug spuds and a salad we had a nutrienteous supper. I did the clean up after eating then we headed out on the golf cart to visit neighbors. We ran into Ann and Sandy Cline on top and sat a spell with him until nearly dark.

Wednesday
It was another cool morning with temp's into the high 50's but got rather hot as the day wore on. Actually when we were leaving Galax,Va around 2:30 it was 90 but very dry with no humidity. Rather nice in the shade out of the direct sunlight. After my morning shot in the belly, quiet times and a lite breakfast we headed out to Galax to shop. On our way into town we visited a friend from Cornerstone who runs a publishing company by the name of Sonfire Media. Larry, the CEO introduced us to his editor who is heading to Indonesia on an unofficial mission trip as that country is about 90 Muslim. Wow was it ever interesting to meet folks who are constantly engaging in world wide operations for the betterment of mankind while putting themselves in harm's way. Check out their website at www.sonfiremedia.com. There are several books by local authors right here along the parkway. He presented us with a book titled "Out of the box and Loving it" by Todd Shaw.
After our visit with Larry and his staff we headed over to Wal-Mart after gassing up. It was unbelievable as we gassed up before shopping and when we came out from the store, gas had increased a nickle a gallon in just 2 hours. Oh well!!! We shared a foot long sub at Subway which is located inside our Wal-Mart in Va. and while we had lunch and shopped I had the truck serviced. Now that's getting 'er done in one place. We made a stop at Horton's on the way out of town for meat.
Well it was close 3 PM before we finally got back to the cabin and I took the rest of the afternoon and propped by leg up and watched the US Open tennis. There were some really good play if your a tennis buff and of course I played the game for years before I got hooked on pickle ball. Anyhow not doing much of any real physical activity as nurse Nancy is watching me like a hawk. The leg is still with out pain so that's a good sign for me, lets hope the shots and pills are getting my blood the right viscosity to avert any other chances for blood clots.
We broiled a couple brats, grilled some Zucchini and had sliced 'maters and cukes for supper, great tasting and no starches. The Ray's came back after an ugly game the night before and won 2-1 so we are still just one game back from the Yanks. LATER

Tuesday
Well here it is the last day of August and already there is a touch of fall in the air in the mornings. The afternoons have been rather warm but very little humidity so its pleasant with the high 80's. After our quiet times this morning and a leftover buckwheat cake and another shot of heparin in the belly I headed to the top of the mountain on the golf cart to pick blueberries. The patch of berries belong to our senior friend Helen who is unable to pick them due to a back injury so I offered to pick them for her. She is pleased they are not going to waste and she has plenty she says in her freezer.
It got rather hot on top in the direct sun so it wasn't long before I had a wet shirt. Nancy came by on her hike and visited while I finished up. I picked about 2 quarts so it will be time for some blueberry cobbler. I headed back home to rest for an hour or so with my leg elevated while taking in some good tennis at the US Open in the TV. We had a lite lunch of 'maters, cukes, onions with basil in a wrap. It was very tasty. Nancy took out pork chops for supper and I grilled them along with canned peas and a salad for supper after we got back from visiting Eddie and Kimberley's farm. They have 6 horses and a mule along 4 dogs and several cats. We had a pleasant visit with them and I managed to scoop up several bags of horse doo-doo for my worms in the compost pile. It was hard to believe but that was the first time we had been to their beautiful place this year.
Well not much else is going on except the Ray's got wiped out by the Jay's last night at home in a 13-5 loss. Wednesday we are heading to Galax and Wal-Mart for some groceries as we are entertaining 2 groups this coming weed end; our original gang of Sequence players on Saturday and the Dalton Gang along with Joe and Helen on Sunday. Should be lots of good eatin' as we celebrate Labor Day. Then on Monday we are heading for a get together with our small group on Monday at the Dalton Ranch and more eatin', somebody get me a wheel barrow, Yikes!!! LATER

Monday
Well it was another very nice morning in the mountains with such quiet coolness in the air with the dew dripping from the roof and in the distant there was the sound of a lonely crow. After our quiet times we got really to head into Sparta for a doctor's appointment for both of us; me for a finger prick to determine the viscosity of my blood and Nancy for blood drawn for her check on her cholesterol after her fast. I flunked the blood check and will have to stay on more heparin shots until Friday with an increase in the daily dosage of cumadin. The leg seems to be getting a little stronger each day with less of an ache and the swelling is decreasing. I had a good report from all the tests from blood, urine, EKG, and lung capacity in my through checkup from last Wednesday. Praise GOD!!!
We headed out after the doctor's visit to a local restaurant for a bite to eat before heading back to the cabin. I headed out to the top of the mountain on the golf cart while Nancy hiked. We met at our friends place so I could pick blueberries for her. We picked about a quart before heading back down after visiting with several neighbors on top. I rested my leg while watching a little of the US Open Tennis until it was time to start supper. Helen came by for some of Nancy's chocolate mousse tarts she had made on Sunday to share with the office staff at the doctors office. They were real pleased with her choice of goodies to share with them and were most appreciative. We gave the rest to Helen as she has a real sweet tooth and we don't need them while she shared them with her brother Joe.
I picked some fresh Swiss chard and sauteed it in olive oil with fresh garlic cloves, wow is that one of my favorite dishes and it went well with wild rice and grilled salmon for supper. I watered the gardens after eating and then we had Ray Todd come by for a visit. Well the Rays won again tonight against the Jay's and hold on to a tie with the Yanks in first place. LATER

Saturday
Well once again it was just a nice morning with dew dripping from the roof and temps down into the high 50's when we awakened. It was close to 8 before we finally rolled out and had our quiet times and a country breakfast. Bacon cooked outside on the grill with fried eggs, grits, toast with some homemade black raspberry jam, ummm!!! After eating Nancy once again gave me a shot in the belly of heparin, she's getting too good at this and really enjoys putting it to me, yikes I need to get out of this cycle.
We did a load of laundry and I just exercised my leg by checking out the gardens. I'm still taking it easy which is very hard for me to do. The leg still has an ache behind the knee and some swelling is still evident to the calf, but its not intolerable as I stayed away from Tylenol the entire day. Nancy took off on her hike to the top and we kept in touch via hand walkie-talkies. She visited with Roddy and Kathy who built on top a year or so ago and they in turn eventually came down for a visit to our place. They seemed to enjoy the uniqueness of our furnishings and loved the flower gardens as well as the "sitting porches."
After they left we got ready to head over to the Dalton Ranch as Nancy was making her infamous oven 'taters to add to the sumptuous feast they had prepared; pork butt and beer in the rear chicken in the smoker, baked beans, salad and homemade strawberry ice cream. Yikes what a feast!!! Unfortunately the guys were distracted by all this food, baseball and football and to which hand Mechelle was playing as she played a "Harvey Hand" since they were one gal short and they sorta put it on us with a 6-3 trouncing in Sequence. "Momma said there would be days like this"wasn't that a song title?? Anyhow it was an enjoyable evening and we laughed and ate to much!!!
The Ray's won 3-2 over the Boston Baddies in the 10 th to stay even with the Yanks. I watched the Japan team beat the Taiwan team in a very good little league game and the the Hawaii team annihilated the team from Texas 10-0. This afternoon they play each other for the world championship. Should be a fun afternoon and the Ray's play Boston tonight on ESPN. Well better get out of here as its time to get ready for worship at Cornerstone in Sparta, N.C. LATER
