Well it was certainly"time to head south with all those smart birds" as the snow(light dusting)and ice were prevalent on all things outside, YIKES!! Florida here we come on Monday morning bright and early. The morning started with us acting like kids on the Christmas eve, wondering if there would be a measurable amount of snow. We weren't disappointed totally as there was enough on the windshield to add a message;(see photo) the leaves in the yard were coated with ice and stayed there just about all morning even with the bright sunshine. It finally got above freezing around lunch time but not much more than that even with the deep blue skies and sunshine so bright it nearly blinded us as we left the cabin around 5:30 for the Dalton farm.
After our quiet times and a smorgasbord of a breakfast; lets see there was 2 biscuits that needed baking, a patty of Jimmy Dean sausage, 2 small leftover fried fish fillets and 2 eggs that needed eating along with a couple slices of must use tomato. After breakfast we started on some serious winterizing the cabin actually it was more like what to we take back with us and what do we leave for next Spring, what clothing needs to go or stay. I headed outside to check on the propane as it was still below freezing, yet it was snug as a bug inside. With this cold I believe we could come in the dead of winter and stay warm enough for a couple weeks, maybe we should try it some winter and do some really winter activities, anyhow it was close to noon before we caught up enough to head out for our only hike of the day.
Nancy had been baking a cheesecake and getting her Mexican rice dish ready for Cornerstone's
homecoming lunch Sunday after church so the cabin smelled as Grand daughter Annsley says "dewishious". She also had a couple pumpkins pies baking for our "Thanksgiving dinner" with the Dalton Gang later in the evening. So it was difficult to leave this warm, smell good cabin but we did and believe me when I say it was nippy it was down right cold. The wind made for it to feel like in the 20's, but the sun was shinning and we loved every step of the way.
After another weird lunch as I grilled a couple of preformed hamburgers patties that I had brought back from Florida a couple time along with a small fillet Mignon and once again a couple tomato's that were going bad, Nancy stuck with some deli ham on Rosemary bread. I ventured outside to dig up the rest of my herbs that I had covered with buckets to keep from freezing then took the plants from in the basement and separated them into wet newspaper for the trip south and into my winter garden there. I planted some mums in the ground and threw away my gorgeous geraniums into the garden as they were just to big to take back. Ms. Helen's has some smaller ones which I will take back as she too has to throw hers away for the winter. I just about finished all of my outside chores except for taking the battery out of the golf cart and storing the grille in the basement which I will do after church on Sunday.
We headed over to the Dalton's to a great dinner and to find that Andy has harvested an 8 point buck in the early morning hours. Well needless to say his way of processing the meat is superb and he sliced up the hams; we tenderized some and ground some into hamburgers, backstrap and tenderloin's for me to take back with us to Florida. Yeow is that ever going to be some great eating. Well I have to report the evening activities with regard to Sequence left the girls on top once again as they squeaked out a controversial win in the end, just as we were getting our second wind and starting to show signs of a come from behind; much like Zenyatta in the Breeder Cup Race but lost by a hair. But the evening was a total success with lots of super eating, laughing and fun. We will surely miss these fine folks.
When we left their place around 10:30(old time) it was 27 degrees and looked as if it would drop even lower as the night progressed. Well better get away from this keyboard as its time to get ready for worship and another day of culinary delights as some of the best eatin' you will ever experience is right here in these mountains. Friday
Yikes, there was ice all over the truck and the roof of the cabin this morning and with temps into the low 30's it was downright cold especially with the wind. After our quiet times Nancy fried up some Jimmy Dean sausage and along with a couple of the Dalton's home grown eggs and some black raspberry jelly on toast it sure made for a delicious way to start the day. I headed down to the basement to get the washing machine ready for a couple loads of laundry. Yeow, was it ever cold hanging the wet clothes out but oh my what a sweet smell the dried clothes exhibited. I pulled out the plants in the basement as it started to warm up pretty rapidly with the bright sunshine and placed them in the yard. There was water dripping from the roof like it was raining; but it was only the sun melting all the ice on the roof.
We decided to head out to the top of the mountain with the temps in the high 30's but the sunshine was bright and it made for a great walk in the woods. The wind was strong on top but down below in the woods it almost seemed warm even though Nancy was dressed like she was in Alaska. I has a sweater on but was quite comfortable while we were walking. We stopped at Normans and found out he was under the weather since getting his flu shot last week, but he seemed to be in good spirits despite having a lot of upper respiratory flu type symptoms. After leaving Norm's we headed on back to the cabin and the temps finally reached 40 degrees and with the bright sunshine it really felt nice. We headed in to get ready to head to Sparta after a bowl of Ramen noodle soup, yumm did that ever taste good on a cold day.
It was good to see that my blood tests results indicate I'm back in the normal parameters and all else seemed to please Dr. K with how I was progressing from the blood clot in the left leg. It seems after another couple weeks of cumadin I can stop this medication as well as the bi-weekly blood tests. We said good-bye to the staff there and received lots of well wishes and hugs. They are some of the nicest professional folks we have ever encountered and we almost feel like family, plus all the good care Nancy and I have received this summer. We were saddened to think we wouldn't see them again until next May.
I dropped off my prescription at the drugstore and then stopped off at Lowes grocery for some travel food for Monday's trip back to Florida; sliced deli ham and rosemary bread. We saw a church member, Diana as well as our mountain top neighbor Brenda at the grocery. There were lots of well wishes from them plus lots of hugs as well and the dreaded thought of them facing another cold and snowy winter here in the mountains. We just love this small town atmosphere and no matter where ever you go you meet and know someone who wishes you well.
The sun was shining brightly but there were dark grey clouds whiched indicated some moisture in them. When we got home from town I wanted to take another walk even though the temps had dropped back down to the low 40's, but the air was so clean, crisp and refreshing so we headed out to the top once again with a few side tracks off into the woods. The view was magnificent once again from the top and with the cold air we could see the buildings in downtown Winston-Salem some 70 miles away. We checked on an aged neighbor Helen as we noticed her garage door up on the morning walk and was still up some 5-6 hours later. She answered the door and seemed fine and was appreciative we took a moment to check on her, especially as she lives alone with no real close neighbors.
We headed on down after the walk and while I was taking down the laundry from the clothes line snow flakes began to fall for a couple of minutes. Mechelle was on the land line telling us it was really snowing hard in Laurel Springs which is located in the southern area of the county. We are hoping there will be enough to lay on the ground for pictures before leaving Monday morning, but if not we will have had our fill of cold temps for quite awhile.
We finished the last of the salad along with the leftover pasta and a can of collard greens to go with some amazing fried fish for supper, Yumm what a supper!!! Well we are buttoned down in the warm cozy cabin for the night. Darkness is here a little after 6 PM with the mountains blocking out the sunlight. I just checked the temperature on the back porch and its right around freezing, Yikes, I'm sure glad I dug up some of my plants this morning and last night and placed them in the basement for tonight as its going to be down into the low 20's. Thursday
Well I was awake early for some unknown reason but still managed to stay between the flannel sheets until 7:30. I was awakened several times during the night with rain dripping onto the tin roof from the bump out of the upstairs bathroom. It was cold outside with temps just about 40 degrees when I checked about 7:30 and the wind was blowing a soft rain about. Your breath was very visible. We decided that since the weather was not looking good today that we would head to Galax, Va. to do the last bit of shopping before heading to Florida on Monday. So I gassed up at $2.58 per gallon before we headed to Wal-Mart. I had the truck serviced while we shopped and then we had lunch at Subway which is inside Wal-Mart. After keeping our shopping to just what we would need for the next couple days we headed over to the old area of Galax to a local grocery store where we found our buckwheat pancake mix. We bought the biggest bag they sold as it will be many months before we get back to Galax.
Our next stop was to fill up another 20 pound propane cylinder just in case the snow which is in the forecast turns out to be more severe than forecasted. This little gas heater has done a remarkable job with keeping the cabin warm and snug. The next 2 days will see temps for the high at around 32 degrees and the lows down into the low 20's, yikes us snowbirds aren't use to those temps even in the dead of winter in Florida. It's kind of exciting with the threat of a winter storm dropping a couple inches of the white stuff on the ground and we are hoping for a little so we can take pictures and even sled ride down the driveway.
After rain fell for most of the day; on our way home we encountered a little sunshine as the skies began to clear and the wind began to increase. It was still in the low 40's and very damp but since we hadn't done much for this day physically we decide to dress warmly and head off to the top of the mountain. As we walked along the back road we could hear the roar of the wind as it topped the mountain top and the sound was very noticeable. We saw no one to speak to, so except for the wind roaring and a few specks of ice crystals on our clothing the hike was uneventful. We were both dressed for Artic weather.
I came back and dug up a couple plants in hopes they will live once I replant them in the warm earth in Florida next week. I dug up a couple green pepper plants and a couple basil plants and put them in the basement along with what few seedlings I have left. I took 5 gallon buckets and covered a couple more herbs before cutting the last of the Swiss chard and kale. I pulled about a dozen small beets so Nancy could boil them for supper along with the sauteed greens and a pork chop. Good wholesome comfort food and we licked the plates clean.
Well not much else is going on except staying close to the heater and watching the temps head south to the freezing levels. LATER

Wednesday
Well it was another nippy start to the day with temps in the low 30's and it was overcast, actually it sprinkled a little just before we got up. Speaking of getting up I had our mountain mom, Helen call us at 6 AM when she awakens so we could get back in the swing of things with an early start instead of getting up at 8 AM. After she called at 6 AM I told Nancy and myself I'm retired so who cares when I roll out especially when the temps were in the 30's. Anyhow I finally told myself 7:30 was a good time to get up and when I checked the temps I wanted to get back in between those flannel sheets.
After our quiet times Nancy sliced some spuds and microwaved them before frying them and then adding a couple fried eggs on top, yeow was that ever good eatin' for a hearty breakfast, especially when adding a little red pepper. After breakfast I headed our to take the seedling out from the warm basement into the cold yard for a little sunshine, but we never saw the sun all day except for a few briefs moments where we could see its silhouette. I decided since the air was cold, overcast and no wind it would be a good day to burn some brush. Actually I cleaned up the back yard area in the woods where limbs, sticks and debris had accumulated for the past couple years. I hauled about a dozen golf cart loads of debris through the day to the fire pit which I started on a couple of huge stumps that had been pushed out when I had the property cleared off in 1993. These stumps where huge and played a major role in making it difficult when Norman my neighbor came down to retrieve the split wood a couple weeks ago. We had to wrap a chain around them to remove them from partially blocking the trail as we moved the trailer loaded with wood. My golf cart managed to move around them but the trailer being a bit wider got hung up and we had to unload the trailer so I felt it was a good time eliminate this problem all together. The stumps were just about burned up by supper time.
I almost forgot to mention around 2 o'clock we headed over to Helen's to saw up several trees that had been blown over and were in her way of cleaning her upper lot. I spent about an hour sawing them down and up and Nancy piled them so she could burn them at a later date, it made for a good break during the day. I did my good deed for the day for someone other than myself.
Nancy and I did 2 hikes today and on the final hike around 4 o'clock we ran into neighbors Fred and Brenda on top, we chatted for a few moments before continuing on as the temps seemed to be dropping once again. Nancy made a delicious supper of chicken piccati with a fresh salad, Yumm!!! Well not much else is going on as it's supposed to rain tonight and turn to snow flurries and some accumulation for Friday with temps in the low 20's and the high of 32, Yikes is this Alaska?? Actually we would like a couple inches just so it would make for a complete 4 season's of weather, but locals here are already crying about this cold winter weather. I don't blame them for being depressed with this weather after all the cold and snow from last winter.LATER

Tuesday
Wow, winter has arrived here in the mountains of N.C. Temp's were in the 30's this morning and didn't get much out of the 40's all day and I just checked on the porch and its already back into the 30's and its just 8 PM. At least it was a sunshine day with bright blue skies. After our quiet times and a lite breakfast I headed outside. Boy was it nippy with me wearing a undershirt, long sleeve shirt and a heavy sweater with a ball cap on my head. I moved the seedlings out of the basement into the bright sunshine and uncovered a couple herbs I want to dig up and bring back to Florida with me next Monday so I can replant into my winter garden.
I headed down into the back area and took the leaf blower and piled up a great pile of leaves to be run over with the lawn mower and spread on the lower garden. I worked at this until Nancy finally emerged from the warm cabin so we could hike to the top. It was still just at 42 degrees and she was dressed for sub-zero temps but the sun was so delightful that it really made for a pleasant walk. Its just a great time to be outside with no bugs and no sweat. I'm sure the deer just love this time of the year as the deer flies, horse flies, gnats and mosquitoes are just not to be found however I did see a couple of large blue blow flies while raking leaves. We didn't see anyone on our hike and it was fun to walk down through the woods off of the normal trail. You can see so much into the woods now that all the leaves from the trees and bushes are gone and it gives you a vision of the steepness of the hills. We are about 3500 feet in elevation at the cabin.
Well after a lunch of frozen pizza baked in the oven we just chilled until it was time to head out to pick Joe and Helen up for a little get away. We headed out to the Piney Creek area where so many of the large homes built for a Cuban clientele from Miami, Florida have been foreclosed on. It is really a beautiful area but because of the gated community we were unable to get into the sub-division and we could only view the houses from a distance. The area in just south of the Virginia line with some beautiful green fields and panoramic views of the mountains. We headed back into town and checked out several roads we weren't familiar with before heading back into the town of Sparta.
We stopped at a new restaurant in town connected to the bowling alley called the River Rock Grille. It's very yuppie for this town much like a typical sports pub and grille. The food was very good and just a little pricey but nothing like most of the other eateries in town. We had a very friendly and informative server and we were pleasantly surprised with our first visit. It has mainly sandwiches and salads they also serve wine and beer and have homemade desserts as well. The owner came by our table and inquired about the meal. Helen and I had the lunch special steak and salad with a great tasting dressing on the side, caramelized onions, mushrooms and Feta cheese. Nancy had the marinated grilled chicken breasts on a bun along with fries and Joe had the BLT on Texas toast with fries. It was a generous portion and quite tasty. We will go back next year if this small town will support them and they are still in business.
After eating we headed back to Joe's place to pick the last of the green peppers and tomato's from the plants which had been killed by the heavy frost. I will have a few green tomato's to take with me on Monday. We then dropped Helen off and headed for home. The temp's were dropping fast and I expect tonight will kill any living plant that's still living in my herb garden, so I took a couple 5 gal. buckets and covered the thyme and parsley as I plan on taking them back to Florida with me. Well the cabin was snug and warm and with the temps dropping quickly so we decided to stay in instead of taking another hike just before sunset.
Well its watch the election results tonight and hopefully America will wake up to what our government is trying to do to us. Lets take back the Congress and once more get this nation back to work, restore our country to the faith based nation we once were and to lower the debt for our kids and grand kids and most important to install term limits.
Enclosed are a couple pictures we took of an old farm house that was once so majestic and is now being restored, notice the thousands of pumpkins left in the fields. We saw lots of old buildings loaded with burley tobacco being cured. Nancy also wanted a new profile picture but didn't choose this one which I liked. LATER

Monday
Well it was in the 30's this AM when I finally crawled out of those warm flannel sheets around 8 AM, Ahh retirement; I love it. After our quiet times Nancy made breakfast burritos with fresh peppers, onions and tomato's with home grown eggs from the Dalton farm. Yikes is that ever good eatin' and they held me until about 1 PM when I shared a yogurt and an apple for lunch. After putting in a load of laundry I ventured out to do a little yard and garden work. Nancy decided around 11 AM that she was ready for the first of our hikes to the top of the mountain. She was dressed in sweats and a hooded coat as we started to the top. It was a pleasant walk with leaves a foot deep in parts on the back road. We saw Joe blowing his collection of leaves from his yard so we stopped and chatted for awhile before continuing on across the top of the mountain.
After our hike we started taking the porch furniture and hauling it down to the shed where it will be stored until next spring along with the benches from around the fire circle were stored beneath the back porch. We usually do this chore on the day before we head out but since it's supposed to rain and turn cold later this week I'm glad to have put them away in a dry space for the winter.
Nancy made a dozen or so cookies so we fired up the golf cart and headed over to our "mountain moms" place with fresh baked cookies for a visit. We stayed about an hour before it started to really cool off so we headed back to the cabin and decided to get in another hike to the top to warm us up and it worked. It was much warmer in the woods as we hiked and I was able to knock down a huge paper hornets nest in the woods with a rock. Even though it was in the 40's and quite cool I noticed a few hornets emerge from their nest when it hit the ground. Nancy retrieved the laundry while I did some minor chores and then we got ready for a lite supper of hot dogs with chili sauce and a salad. We are trying to eat down the freezer so we won't have to haul a bunch of frozen food home.
Well its been an uneventful day except for the cool temp's and tomorrow is the start of some really cold weather heading our way. There is even the chance of snow this week-end, Yikes now that should be an eventful occurrence. Well I will try to get a little baseball in this evening as the Giants are about to close the Rangers out of the World Series in 5 games. LATER

Sunday
Well it was another nippy morning but warmed up to the middle 60's for the day with bright sunshine and blue skies. After our usual quiet times and a lite breakfast we got ready for worship at Cornerstone in Sparta. It was good to see all and we felt a little sad to think this would be our last visit with them before heading back to hot sunny Florida but we learned next Sunday will be their 7 th anniversary homecoming so we decided to stay until next Monday, providing the snow doesn't get too deep. Actually the weatherman is calling for snow flurries this next week with highs only in the low 30's. Our little gas wall mounted heater is keeping us snug and warm so far but not to sure about temps in the 20's.
We had a guest speaker who actually went to the Ukraine to help with the distribution of "shoebox" gifts to the children while spreading the gospel with Operation Christmas Child. Her story was very inspiring and unique. The worship music was awesome and the new singer, Natasha with the praise band has a fantastic voice. After the service we stopped by the library and dropped a couple books off then stopped at Lowes for a few goodies before heading back out to the cabin. Neighbor Gerald was gone back to Raleigh and our hill top looked barren now with most of the beautiful leaves gone. Winter is fast approaching although the afternoon sun was warm out of the wind. After a quick lunch of leftover bean soup for me and leftover chicken on homemade bread for Nancy we took off for our only hike of the day. We saw only Fred on his tractor scraping his driveway on top of the mountain, so we headed on back to take an extended golf cart ride. We headed up the back roads and out to the mailbox looking for our resident black bear. We saw lots of squirrels but that's about all.
I camped in front of the T.V. watching a little NFL for the next couple hours and it felt good to vegetate after a busy past couple days. We were heading over to the Dalton Ranch to eat and play Sequence later and what an evening it turned out to be. We managed to get in a couple games called "corn hole" which is becoming very popular everywhere.Bobby(our son)is very much into this game at his church's get together's as he is always talking about this game as well. Its much like horseshoes but bags filled with shelled corn are tossed 30 feet onto a raised box with a circular hole in the center. Its was a fun time as it was my first time to participate. Caleb and myself gave his dad(Andy) and p-paw(Gerald) a good match. The guys once again smacked down the gals in a close match of Sequence 4-3. That's 2 wins in a row for us guys(I believe that's a record) anyhow it was a great evening with Andy's smoked baby backs ribs, beer in the rear chicken, Kay's salad, Nancy's tater's and Mechelle's blackberry wine cake she won at an auction. What a feast and the company was even better. We will surely miss these good times and super friends until next Spring, actually the gals decided at the last minute they wanted to suffer a little more before next year and since we are now staying until next Monday that we would play again on Saturday night, such gluttons for punishment, oh well!!!
Nancy took a few pictures of their critters, etc before it was time to sit down for supper. LATER
